The moment that baby is placed in our arms, life changes as we once knew it. Our hearts are broken so to speak. In that moment, we know that we are holding in our hands the greatest treasure we have ever laid our eyes on. That baby is the most precious – the most valuable – jewel we have ever been given. We vow to always protect, guide, and love beyond measure this gift God has bestowed upon us. And throughout our life, we do just that. Not perfect. But we take them by the hand when they’re young, warn them of danger, go to bat for them, and help them succeed in life. And as Christians, we should always try to impart spiritual truths to them and pray for them continually.
While our children hold great worth in our hearts, there is something that is far greater, far richer, and far more costly. You might think… Not a chance. But the psalmist disagrees. He tells us exactly what it is in Psalm 19… the WORD OF GOD. I spent some time pondering this chapter this morning and again, my heart was awakened, set on fire. Let’s examine what he says about God’s Word.
First, he tells us that the Word of God is perfect (v. 7), trustworthy (v. 7), right (v. 8), clear (v. 8), pure (v. 9), true (v. 9), fair (v. 9), more desirable than gold (v. 10), sweeter than honey (v. 10). Think about this for a minute. What does this mean? It means that nothing in this life (even my children) can compare to it. I can trust in it, rely on it, stand on it, and hold to it. Why? Because it will never fail me and it will always lead me in the right direction. When I hold it, I’m holding the VERY WORD of the LORD.
Second, the psalmist tells us what the Word of God does for us. It revives our soul (v. 7), makes us wise (v. 7), brings joy to the heart (v. 8), gives insight for living (v. 8), lasts forever (v. 9), offers a great reward for those who obey it (v. 11). Again, what does this mean? It means that everything I need in this life comes from the Word of God. I CAN have great success in this Christian life, live abundantly, and make God proud. But those things are only possible by obeying the Word of God.
With all that said, what must I do with it? Well, like anything that is of value… we cling to it (going to God’s Word first… before any other resource), we protect it all costs (protect it from those who are trying to dismantle it, twist or, or from those who cut out huge portions to fit their own agenda), we fight with it (this spiritual war, that is), we listen to it (the admonitions and the warnings), we love it (beyond anything else), we obey it (all of it).
The best thing we can do each morning is run to the Word of God. Let God’s Word prevail over all other resources – devotionals, sermons, books, podcasts, etc. Then the wisdom of the Lord will empower us and help us to navigate this life. Ponder Psalm 19 today, writing down what God is saying to you.
