My sister-in-law is a prosecuting attorney… and a very good one. She has put a lot of bad people away for life. One time I asked her if she ever lost a case. She had to think and then she said, “Once.” Hence, the courtroom is a familiar place to Laura. Not to me, though. In fact, I’ve never been in an earthly courtroom. But EVERY DAY I’m dragged into another courtroom where my dirty laundry is revealed before the Judge. In fact, I’m accused night and day (Revelation 12:10). And my prosecutor will say whatever is necessary to convict me. He will lie. He will bring in false witnesses. He will stoop to the lowest place possible just to make a convincing case.
This courtroom is God’s place of judgment. And His law is holy and righteous. While I have sought to obey the laws of this land, I can never meet the high standards of God’s law. I fall short every time (Romans 3:23). And His penalty for disobedience is steep (Romans 6:23). Here’s the thing though… God doesn’t see me like other criminals. Why is that? Because at the moment of my salvation, Jesus poured out His blood into me. Jesus imputed His righteous character into me. Therefore, God doesn’t see the wickedness, sin, and rebellion I was born with. So no matter what Satan, my prosecutor, says about me… God doesn’t believe it. He only sees His Son’s blood flowing through me. And this pure blood erases all my impurities.
Yet, the courtroom continues to convene every day. And because of that, I need the BEST defense attorney. How in the world could I ever afford an attorney that could win against this powerful prosecutor? Well, no worries! The price has been paid for the One assigned to my case. It was paid with red not green. The Bible calls Him my ADVOCATE. And He knows me inside and out. He knows my heart… while its tendency is to disobey and rebel against God’s righteous law, He knows that I want to do what’s right and that’s enough for Him. Every lie that Satan brings before the holy Judge, my Advocate slams to the ground. Nothing the evil prosecutor says has any merit in THIS courtroom.
EVERY Christian has the same ADVOCATE… the One who comes to our aid and pleads our case. He speaks for our rights. He knows the law. And here’s another thing that’s amazing about our ADVOCATE. He doesn’t just defend us in theory, but He defends us by experience. He lived here. He knows the struggles we face because He lived in a human body. While He was without sin, He stood face-to-face with the tempter. And the best thing about our ADVOCATE is that He loves us… so it is His privilege to represent us righteous before the righteous Father. Let this encourage you today.
